EVERYTHING ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT STANDARD FOR TECHNICAL WRITERS

IEC/IEEE 82079-1 is the most important standard for the preparation of all types of usage information – from a tin of paint to very complex products such as large-scale industrial machinery.
Over four years, the standard has been comprehensively revised and updated under the leadership of IEC, in collaboration with ISO and IEEE. The three international standards organizations have combined their expertise to jointly develop the standard. IEC/IEEE 82079-1 Ed.2 covers information for use of all products within the scope of these organizations, and it applies to both electrotechnical and non-electrotechnical products as well as for software. The standard is an inter-organizational consensus of principles and general requirements for the preparation of information for use for all types of products and for different target audiences - from non-skilled persons like unqualified consumers to skilled persons like professionals.

The revised version was published in May 2019 under the new title "IEC/IEEE 82079-1 Ed.2 Preparation of information for use (instructions for use) of products - Part 1: Principles and general requirements". In April 2020 the standard was adopted by CENELEC as EN/IEC/IEEE 82079-1 and then published by the national standardization bodies.
